Janet Napolitano: Legalization a hard shell

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0509/22735.html

It is extremely difficult to read that attempts to gather support for illegal immigration will take place, "in the May neighborhood.” Illegal immigration has been an ongoing hot controversial topic for years! And the only reason that things haven't been accomplished is because of fear and a wrong assortment of prioritizing. Obama seems to have plans on helping immigration but has not put anything into action, which I desperately hope gets done.

I am a first generation high school grad in my family, but more than that I am the first generation of my family that is legal. I could possible go on telling the story of my families hard ships and explain everything we have contributed to our community and country after tears of sacrifice and hard work. However, that wont make a difference because I would not be the first to say that type of story.

I do my best at trying to take other prospectives of the topic, yet it is very difficult to accept a point of view when mine/ours is not taken. I understand that country is going through a hard economic downturn. I don't understand how this would make it more difficult to "sell" legalization of illegal immigrants to Americans. I agree with Chief Alan Greenspan when he says that "llegal immigration— has made a significant contribution to the growth of our economy." It seems more real to believe this is when everyone would attempt to get some form of reform accepted.

Immigration numbers are still rocket high regardless if they are decreasing. There has got to be some form of understanding that with all the incoming numbers of people, our economy can only flourish. Not only will more goods and services be bought, but they will be demanded because of the increase of purchases. Meaning a decline in unemployement. I do not understand how immigrants are undercutting wages of Americans. When it is the immigrants that are creating jobs by contributing into the market. (Anger builds up)

I return to the fact that no decision has been made about legalizing all if not a portion of the illegal immigrants here in the United States because of FEAR. There is tension within all illegal immigrants when it comes to confronting the issue and illegal life they are living simply because they have an even worse life back in their home countries. In the U.S. they live with fear of being deported, discriminated, or pushed around for not have the same stance as Americans. However, they prefer that instead of living in their native countries and dying of hunger or other things brought upon by their governments. If there wasn't so much hatred and selfishness amongst us Americans we could be improving the lives of thousands of people already living in our country. People who work for us, serve us, and contribute to our society.

There has definitely have to be a set decision or dedication towards fixing this controversial topic. Either there is a true effort to making the dream of many come true or not, like they did a few years back with the H.R. But something definitely has to be done not only for children are legal and have illegal parents, but also for children and adults who deserve the opportunity that everyone esle does.

  1. Strong and personal blog post! I agree that we need to tackle this issue head on and remember our heritage. There must be sensible restrictions placed on who comes in and out of the country but there is not doubt we can be more inclusive and less xenophobic, while helping our economy and national security.
